INK INVENT-RheoLight™

Vehicle safety visibility is closely connected to cameras, LiDAR systems, lighting, and other sensing technologies. But from a CMF perspective, is it possible to achieve this kind of functional visibility design? The answer is yes. The idea is to treat “visibility” as a material property that actively interacts with light, thereby enhancing the visibility, spatial depth, and optical performance of coated surfaces.

RheoLight™ has developed a ready-to-use Crystal Glass pigment dispersion for coatings and inks, giving coated surfaces retroreflective properties. This improves vehicle visibility and detectability, ultimately enhancing safety. Especially at night, RheoLight™ strengthens recognition by the human eye, cameras, and LiDAR systems, supporting more accurate perception and decision-making.

RheoLight™ is a functional liquid additive, developed by Ink Invent, that introduces controlled, light-reactive micro-glass structures into paint and coating systems.

Unlike traditional pigments or effect fillers that primarily modify color or texture, RheoLight™ is designed to actively interact with light, enhancing visibility, depth, and optical performance of coated surfaces.

RheoLight™ is supplied as ready-to-use dispersions, compatible with both water-based and solvent-based coating systems, allowing seamless integration into industrial paint manufacturing without altering established processing routes.

The CMF design concept of RheoLight™ is based on “visibility as a material property.”

Traditionally, visibility is treated as a secondary outcome of color choice or gloss level. RheoLight™ redefines this approach by embedding optical behavior directly into the material formulation, making visibility an intentional and controllable CMF parameter.

Our CMF philosophy focuses on:

· Light management rather than color saturation

· Subtle optical effects instead of decorative sparkle

· Functional aesthetics that improve safety, recognition, and perception

This approach allows designers and formulators to create surfaces that remain visually clear, readable, and expressive under changing lighting conditions including daylight, low light, and artificial illumination.

CMF Design Challenge | CMF

During an in-depth analysis of the paint and coating market, we identified a critical and unresolved CMF challenge: vehicle visibility is not treated as a measurable, adjustable material property, especially under low-light conditions.

Existing solutions such as lights, reflectors, and color choices, do not sufficiently support object recognition and shape perception, particularly in the context of advanced driver assistance systems (camera- and LiDAR-based).

Our objective to resolve this challenge was to enhance three-dimensional visibility of complete objects without compromising color freedom, surface quality, or industrial manufacturability.

CMF Design Approach | CMF

We reframed visibility as a core CMF parameter, integrated directly into the coating material rather than applied as an external element.

The design process focused on:

· Making visibility measurable and adjustable

· Preserving the existing color landscape

· Ensuring compatibility with large-scale industrial coating systems

This led to the development of a combined CMF toolset:
RheoLight™ Crystal Glass Pigments to influence visibility, and the 3D Color Visibility Label to measure it.

CMF Solution & Innovation | CMF

By introducing optically engineered Crystal Glass Pigments into the coating matrix, RheoLight™ enhances light interaction within the paint layer.

This improves object recognition and shape visibility of three-dimensional forms independently of color and gloss, allowing designers to enhance safety while maintaining aesthetic freedom.

The solution is:

· Color-independent

· Industrially scalable

· Compatible with both water- and solvent-based systems

Design Outcome |

The CMF design process resulted in a new value proposition:
integrating safety-driven visibility directly into color design — “Safety made Beautiful”.

This approach enables manufacturers and consumers to consciously choose more visible surfaces, contributing to safer mobility without sacrificing design intent.
